IT was a garden scene fit for a prince.

His Serene Highness, Prince Bhisadej Rajani of Thailand yesterday admired the plants and flowers at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens during a three-day visit to the state.

He is a member of the Thai royal family and is a close relative of the King of Thailand.

A keen photographer, he is visiting Tasmania for the first time after promoting The Royal Project Foundation at the Fine Food Australia show in Melbourne.

"I'd heard the flowers in Tasmania are beautiful," he said.

"They're very nice, the rhododendrons are very beautiful.

"It's very nice and natural, to get all the plants in the same place must be very difficult."

The prince is a director of The Royal Project Foundation, an initiative set up by the King of Thailand to assist hill tribes replace illicit opium plants with temperate crops such as arabica coffee.

The project has an exhibit at Fine Food Australia until tomorrow.
